Hello Solids!

Presenting solid food in front of the baby and making them eat is not an easy job for a mother. It’s a tough ride with a lot of bumps and bars. But at the same time it’s an interesting as well as exciting phase for the mother. The baby for the first time tastes the solid food, touches it, feels it, swallows it like a grown up human and perhaps sometimes likes it. When a baby is born I think there is no one more occupied and busy like a mother. Till the age of six months the mother breast feeds her baby, takes utmost care of her dear little one and thinks and dreams and get’s anxious about her day and night. Not even nights are peaceful for the mother then. Gradually the baby grows up and reaches the age of six months. Now the mother is occupied with the thought “what should I feed my baby today?” She stresses over various aspects of feeding solids to her infant like for example “will this food cause allergy to my baby?” And the mother succeeds in making her baby eat the solid and through this mother the baby gets introduced to foods which make the baby to grow and to live a strong and healthy life.

So let’s talk about this topic.

When should I introduce solid food to my baby..?

Well, you can introduce food to your baby between the age of 4-6 months if your baby is ready. Below are some suggestions to ensure if your baby is ready:

  1. If your baby can sit up on a high back chair and hold his head and neck.
  2. If his birth weight had doubled (approximately).
  3. If he is interested in eating what you are eating and tries to touch and mess with it.
  4. If he can keep the food in his mouth and gulps it down.
  5. If he doesn’t push the food out of his mouth.

But it’s highly recommended by pediatrician to introduce solids after the age of 6 months to prevent any kind of harm.

What solids to start with?

It will be easier to start with simple, well mashed, healthy and nice textured food. To begin with, you can start with baby rice or cereals or barley or oats. Keep a check that your baby doesn’t get any allergy or gas or anything of that sort. Then introduce some vegetables mashed and cooked with the rice along with some pulses. This is what we Indians call “Khichdi”.

You can give some fruits and vegetables. You can give them 2 to 3 kinds of mashed fruit one at a time to see that it doesn’t cause any harm to your baby. Mashed banana, apple puree, mashed papaya, melon juice are some fruits you can begin with. Then you can give them well cooked carrots, sweet potato, vegetable soup with some potato, pumpkin puree.  Remember to introduce one food at a time. It means if you introduce your baby with mashed banana today then wait for 2 days and then introduce any other new food. Introducing your child with the above mentioned fruits and vegetables and cereals will help him to grow strong with a healthy balanced diet. Try with new textures every time; it will help your baby to get attracted to the color of the food.

How to feed my baby..?

A mother needs to understand her baby’s temperament. Be cautious of which food your baby likes to eat and which he doesn’t like to eat. Put a baby bib around his neck and make him sit up on a high back chair. Make sure he can hold his neck and head in a stable manner. Sit across your baby on a high chair to make sure you can eye contact with your baby while feeding. Use a plastic baby feeding spoon and keep a clean napkin. For the first time you can take a very small amount and feed him so to see how he reacts to the foods. If he likes it then continue. Don’t push and force the food into his mouth if he doesn’t like it or doesn’t want to eat. Don’t stress and worry if your child doesn’t eat much. It will eventually happen.

Introducing food for the first time to your baby is fun too. These are exciting and cherish able moments for your baby so make sure you don’t forget to capture these moments of joy. Enjoy every hurdle and achievement of your motherhood. Foods are introduced by a mother which lasts for lifetime. Wishing your child a very happy, healthy and strong life and wishing the mother a very happy and joyful motherhood.
